Stanford published its annual AI Index Report

The following are the key findings:

  • There were 149 new models released in 2023, compared to 32 in 2022 and 9 in 2021. This also incurred a large expenditure in these models.

  • 66% of these were open source compared to 33% in 2021

  • Many exceeded some human performance comparisons

  • 57% were industry developed with the remainder a combination of indutry and education

  • There were significant discoveries in sorting algorithms, improved weather forecasts, health benefits due to discoveries in genetic mutations and new materials
